It was mother's day back a few weeks ago, and my mum was happily overseas, ditching us kids at home to fend for themselves. Which was fine because they hardly ever go on holidays, so it was really good that she took two weeks off to visit China. She came back on a Saturday and since I was out that day, I managed to get her a belated Mother's Day cake.

This was the maccha red bean cake from 85degrees.

It looked beautiful and I really only got it because of appearance, and because I know my mum doesn't like rich and super sweet cakes, as well as not being a big fan of strawberries. I actually bought this out in the city and it was almost an hour's ride back home on the bus, but the thing about this cake was that for some reason, it was frozen.... so it didn't die on the bus.

It was beautiful even when cut, but the thing about 85 degrees is that even though it looks beautiful, the taste isn't really anything special. My dad said he couldn't taste it at all, it was like eating something without sugar... and my brother suspected they forgot to add sugar even.

Still, it wasn't entirely bad... though I probably won't get another 85degree cake for a while... even though other Asian bakeries like Savoy make less flashy looking cakes, they are actually much more delicious.
Maybe I'll work on my patisserie skills and make one for her next year.... haha. Anyway, mum was happy so that is all that matter =) The hardest years of being a parent are over for her (when kids are all young or during adolescent ages) so it's time to relax and just enjoy life.
